How to measure your T-shirt size
The measurements needed for a
T-shirt are chest width and length.
Measuring Chest
width:
we provide two measurements for Chest width
for all our t shirts; Actual chest which refers to the actual measurement of the
garment itself, and ‘Chest to fit’ which relates to the size of the t shirt
wearers chest.
To measure your chest size, run a fabric tape measure
under your arms and fit it around the fullest part of your chest. It’s important
to have the tape measure parallel to the ground, not dipping, sagging or twisted
which distorts the measurement and impacts the fit of the tshirt.
Take
note of the measurement at the point where the tape crosses, ensuring you can
breathe easily, or else your t shirt may be too tight. This is what we refer to
as the ‘Chest to fit’ measurement of our t shirts.
Alternatively, get one of your existing T shirts that you know fits and measure it from armpit to
armpit. This is what we refer to as the ‘Actual Chest’ of our T Shirts.
waist.
Measuring T Shirt Length:
Either measure
an
existing T-shirt from the top of the back of the neck to the bottom of the
hem, and use that as a gauge, or get a friend to help you measure from the
middle of the back of your neck, down your spine to a suitable length for the
T-shirt you desire, bearing in mind that “cropped” and “long”. All our t
shirts
have length measurements on the ‘size information’
tab.
T-shirts are made
of varying fabrics and designed to have a
range of fits from slim to relaxed –
read descriptions carefully, and read
reviews from other customers on our
products to see if there are any issues
with the fit such as being fitted or
baggy.
How to measure your shirt size
While shirts for men are
traditionally based on two measurements: neck size and sleeve length, shirts for
women often only have a bust measurement, and it’s increasingly common for
fashion shirts to come in sizes such as small, medium and large, for both
sexes.
Men’s Shirts
Measuring neck
size:
Easiest done with assistance. Measure around your neck about an
inch above where it meets the shoulders, ensuring the tape is snug but not
constricting or loose. Shirt sizes are still measured in half inch
increments in
most of the world, so a 16 shirt fits somebody with a 16”
neck, while a 16 ½
shirt fits anybody whose neck size is more than 16 but
less than 17
inches.
Sleeve: once again assistance is helpful. While
standing, set
your hand comfortably on your hip so the upper and lower arms
are at an acute
angle to each other. Measure from the centre of your
neck—at about the middle
point of where a shirt collar’s height would
be—out and around the elbow and
down to the wrist. Generally this
measurement will be between 31 and 38 inches,
although larger sizes are
becoming more common. Always buy up a size, rather
than down, as too short
sleeves look and feel bad.
The combination of
neck and sleeve
measurement gives you the right sizing for a fitted shirt. Below
is a rough
guide to how neck sizes may translate into fashion sizes, but these
will
vary by manufacturer, so please check the actual measurements on our sizing
information tabs on each product to be sure.
Extra small = 13½ to 14 ½
inches
Small = 14 ½ to 15½ inches
Medium = 15 ½ to 16½
inches
Large =
16 ½ to 17 ½ inches
On up to XXXXXL, which is 25½
inches or
more.
Measuring Women’s
shirts
Take a bust
measurement around the broadest part of
the bust, with the tape parallel to the
floor. Remember that petite sizing
is aimed at women below 5ft 3 inches, while
regular is aimed at women
between 5ft 4 inches and 5ft 7 inches, while tall is
for women 5ft 8 inches
or above.
Fit also matters: fitted or slim means
the shirt is form
fitting and may gape around the buttons if you have the bust
measurement
too tight, so allow a little extra when measuring. Standard or
regular are
not tailored to be either figure hugging or loose, and comfort fit
is
relaxed and roomier and may hang a little loose from the body, so ensure you
don’t overestimate your size.
